Joseph A. Sturgeon, 87, passed away at his home surrounded by family on May 9 shortly after hearing that the corn had been planted. He was born January 26, 1931 in Clinton, the only child of Joseph and Edna (Carnell) Sturgeon. He lived his life as a much-respected farmer in Riley and a proud member of electrical union IBEW Local #725 where he helped numerous young men become electrical apprentices. Joe is a veteran of the US Army, serving in the early 1950’s in Germany as a medic with the #169th Infantry. After retiring, he and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed spending winters in Florida. His favorite pastime was playing cards – any type of card game, he was ready to go. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Pacer & Purdue basketball games and took particular pleasure whenever Indiana State beat IU. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Barbara; his children, Marty Sturgeon of Haslett, Michigan and Roger (Kathy) Sturgeon of Terre Haute; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren and last but not least, his Pugh, Willie. In appreciation for the kindness and care provided to Joe during his final weeks, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation, envelopes will be available at the church.
