Alferd Alan Hamblen “Butch”, 74, of Fairbanks, Indiana, passed away May 1, 2019. He was born November 29, 1944, in LaPorte, Indiana to Fred Hamblen and Hazel (McClendon) Hamblen. Alferd served in the United States Marine Corp as a Sergeant during Vietnam. He graduated with a Bachelors degree from Indiana State University. Alferd retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, as a Correctional Counselor. He also served on the Vigo County School Corporation Board. He enjoyed Civil War history, Genealogy, poetry, politics, and playing the accordion. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years Paula Yvonne Hamblen, who passed in July of 2018, and siblings Joseph Hamblen and Martha Eloa Hamblen. Alferd is survived by his children Robin Hamblen (Danny Pound), Shannon Strain (Shawn), and Benjamin Hamblen (LeeAnn); grandchildren Eli Buntain (Erin), Ethan Hamblen (Amber), Haley Strain (Brad), Katlyn Matherly (David), Luke Cowden, Joseph Hamblen, and Lauren Hamblen; great grandchildren Wyatt Hamblen, Weston Hamblen, Warren Hamblen, Otto Fortin, Bentley Akers, and Brody Akers; siblings Elisha Hamblen “PeeWee” and David Hamblen. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 1:00p.m. in Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana, 47804. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday, from 11:00a.m. until service time. Cremation will be scheduled after services. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
