Barbara Tingley Obituary

Barbara Sue Tingley, 102,  died February 13, 2024 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was born on January 27, 1922 to Clarence Eib and Sue Marie (Hess) Tingley in Terre Haute. Barbara was a 1939 graduate of Riley High School, received a BS in Education from Indiana State Teachers College (ISU) in 1943, an MS in Nutrition & Elementary Education from Indiana University, and an Ed.S in Curriculum & Supervision from Purdue University. Barbara was a teacher, dietician, and public health nutritionist. She taught at the school of nursing at St. Anthony Hospital and Union Hospital, also serving in the dietary department at both hospitals in the 1940s. She went on to work as a Home Economics teacher at Broadripple High School in Indianapolis. From there she worked as a public health nutritionist for sixteen counties in southwest Indiana. She moved to Michigan to work for the Oakland City Health Department, then came back to Indiana to work as the executive director of the Dairy Council of Indianapolis. Later she worked as the assistant supervisor in Vocational Home Economics at the Indiana State Department of Public Instruction. Finally, she spent several years at the Indiana State Department of Health as a medical surveyor in the Medicare/Medicaid program. After retirement, Barbara taught at the J. Everett Light Career Center. She volunteered at the Indianapolis Zoo for over twenty years.

Barbara’s memberships included the Indiana Dietetic Association (Chairman of the Central District), American Home Economics Association (President of the state chapter), League of Women Voters, Voyager 1000 Travel Club, and Ambassadair Travel Club, to name a few.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother William Eib Tingley and his wife Norma, infant sister Betty, and Barbara’s former husband Bernard P. Morley. She was like a second mother to her nieces and nephews, who all survive her: Carole Gonyner (Jimmie) of New Mexico, William D. Tingley (Jill) of Michigan, Michael R. Tingley (Susan) of Terre Haute, Jeanne Nicholson of Terre Haute, and their children and grandchildren. Per her request, a private family service will be held at Highland Lawn Cemetery.
