Billie Jo “BJ” Hilton Phillips, 72 passed away peacefully on November 3, 2020 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital with her family and friends by her side. She was born on February 12, 1948 to Rudolph “Rudy” and Leola Hilton. Billie Jo graduated from Honey Creek High School class of 1966 and attended Indiana State University.
Billie Jo was a proud retired USPS postmaster and loved serving her community. One of her primary accomplishments as a Postmaster was assisting in the development and implementation of the address information 911 emergency call system for Terre Haute, IN.
She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, was a proud member of the American Legion Post 104, and a long-time member of a local bowling league.
Billie Jo had the most giving heart. She loved her family and friends holding each of them in a special place. She had a self-sacrificing character and cared for everyone in her life. She loved entertaining family and friends in her home for family reunions and holidays. Billie loved to cook and mentored her son-in-law in the kitchen.
We cannot forget her competitive spirit of playing card games like Mahjong, Euchre, Pinochle, and Sequence with her family and friends. Billie Jo was a true Hoosier sports fan. She loved her Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers and her beloved Indiana Hoosiers basketball team. Of course, TV night would be an energetic atmosphere watching her Indiana Hoosiers basketball and TV games shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Her hobbies extended to loving to read and was a big fan of crime, mystery, and historical books. She also liked to try new restaurants and could provide a culinary review.
Billie Jo is survived by her husband Melvin “Mel” Phillips whom were united in marriage on November 22, 1989. She is also survived by her daughter Heidi Fredericks and Heidi’s husband Brett, her step-daughters Melina Phillips and Heather Wells and Heather’s husband Scott.
