Carl T. Baker, 85, of Terre Haute, was cleared for his final take off on February 18, 2018. He was born May 5, 1932 in Seelyville, IN . His parents, Herschel Baker and Beatrice Kearschner Baker Malony preceded him in death.
Carl was a 1950 graduate of Glenn High School where he proudly played on the basketball team that won the Wabash Valley Championship. He married Barbara Armacost on November 26, 1952 at Mount Pleasant Church.
He graduated from ISU with a teaching degree and started his teaching career at Glenn High School which included teaching Driver's Education and coaching 8th grade basketball but most of his teaching career was at Lost Creek Elementary as a 6th grade teacher. Many students remember him for
giving them their first airplane ride which he did at the end of the school year. He had a special place in his heart for the kids from the Glenn Home and always made sure they got to fly too.
Ever the entrepreneur, he and Barbara had several business ventures under the Baker Enterprises, Inc. name. The final venture was contracting with the Federal Government for HVAC contracts on military bases throughout the United States.
Carl always made sure his family was having fun. There were always horses, motorcycles, golf carts, mopeds, and cars to ride and drive. The family also enjoyed water skiing on summer breaks.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Baker, 3 daughters, Brenda Kirchner (Jack) of Terre Haute, Chris Thoerner (Scott) of Irvine, California, and Bonnie Hicks (Andy) of Columbus, IN ; seven grandchildren, Kari Kirchner Dayhuff (Derek) of Terre Haute, Samantha Hicks McIntosh (Matt) , Ben, Daniel and Thomas Hicks all of Columbus, IN, Dylan and Sarah Thoerner of Irvine, California; two great grandchildren, Avery and Gracyn McIntosh also of Columbus, IN ; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jerry and Violet Lindsay of Terre Haute.
The family will have a private memorial service on Carl's birthday, May 5, 2018.
