Carroll Greiner Obituary

Carroll G. Greiner, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday November 20, 2024 in Union Hospital, Carroll was born in Detroit Michigan on May 25, 1930 to Raymond E. Greiner and Harriett Martha Fox Greiner. He was a member of Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church for over 40 years. His family had moved to Detroit during the depression from Blackhawk and Riley Indiana for better employment, they returned to Blackhawk in 1932 where he lived until moving to Terre Haute in 1946. He attended Blackhawk through his sophomore year and graduated from Wiley High School in 1948. He was a member of the Football Team while at Wiley and helped the team to become City Champs in 1947. While at Wiley he met the love of his life, Ruth Lynette Allenbaugh, they lived in the same neighborhood and began dating while they were both attending School. They were married July 21, 1950 shortly after Ruth’s graduation from Wiley in 1949. Carroll was in the US Navy and worked on the repair ship Gordius while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. While in the Navy, their first child, Julie was born and the entire family returned to Terre Haute in 1953. Carroll worked at DuPont after returning to Terre Haute until they announced they were shutting down operations. He was offered a position if he would move but decided to stay in Terre Haute and raise his family and be close to his parents as well as Ruth’s. He began working at The Federal Penitentiary in 1955 and retired as Chief of Mechanical Services in 1984 after 29 years of service. While at the Penitentiary he won many awards, included Federal Prisons employee of the year for the entire United States. After retirement he began working with Newlin Johnson Property Management until his retirement in 2004. He was an avid car collector, collecting and restoring antique Auto’s with a special interest in Model “A” Fords. He and his family traveled all over the country in usually the 1929 Ford Sedan, along with their lifelong friends, Bill and Maryellen Staggs, Dick and Doris Logsdon and Phil and Aretha Cantrell. He was active in the Sycamore “A”s of Terre Haute formerly known as Wabash Model A Club since 1961 and still owner of the 1929 Sedan he purchased in 1961. He as an avid gardener supplying family and friends with fresh vegetables all summer. He had an incredible work ethic and could fix anything that needed fixed, if he didn’t have to part to fix it he would make it.  He was very devoted to his family and always wanted to make sure they were safe, healthy and happy. He and his brothers took very good care of their parents as they grew older and was devoted husband and father. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Merle L. Greiner and Larry R. Greiner and his wife, Ruth L. Allenbaugh Greiner who passed away in 2003. He is survived by his two children; Julie L. Walters and her husband Tom of Franklin, IN and Gary G. Greiner of Terre Haute. He is survived by two grandsons, Christopher T. Walters of Franklin, IN. and Paul R. Walters and his wife Sarah of Greenwood, IN. He is survived by two great grandsons; Declan Walters and Beckham Walters. Sister-in-law Gloria Greiner of Riley, IN. Nieces and Nephews; Paul Field and her husband Larry, Geri Johnston and her husband Hal, Jeff Greiner and his wife Shellie, Bob Richmond and his wife Danielle, Sally Roetker and her husband Jim, Lori Peters and her husband Gary, Cheryl Shepherd and her husband Scott of Carmel, IN, Brad Greiner and his wife Jill of Riley, IN, as well as many great nieces and nephews. Services are at 1:00 Monday November 25, 2024 at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN. 47804. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the Funeral Home at the funeral home. Pastor Andy Fishback will be conducting services. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery.
