Charlene Nichols Obituary

Charlene Nichols, 82 years young, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at
Westminster Health Care Facility of dementia. She has been a resident their the last
few years.
Born on March 22, 1943, to Charles S. Schlup and Wanita M. Schlup, Char grew up in
Terre Haute and graduated from Wiley High School. In her younger years, Char worked
alongside her grandfather and parents fulfilling furniture orders for Montgomery Wards
and JCPenney and doing upholstery work. Char was a homemaker and mom for many
years and served as a Cub Scout leader and Girl Scout leader. Later in her life, Char
worked as a teacher’s assistant at Learning Tree Montessori School in Terre Haute. In
2006, Char moved to Brazil, Indiana, and spent her time caring for her granddaughter
and especially enjoyed having her young granddaughter go to work with her and learn
the Montessori teaching method. Char also worked for the YMCA of Clay County as an
After School Care employee.
Char has previously been a Lady of the Moose at Terre Haute Lodge 1009. She made
many friends there and held various offices within the Ladies Chapter. She especially
loved listening to music and dancing and participating in Moose Heart for Children.
Char was proceeded in death by her parents, brother, Warren, and niece Lynn. She is
survived by son, Rick (Jerry Case) of Chicago, daughter Michelle Engle (Mark) of Brazil,
IN, and granddaughter Ariella Engle also of Brazil, IN. She is also survived by her sister
Ina Sparks (Doyle), and brother Chuck Schlup (Janice), as well as seven nieces and
their families, many cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3pm until 7pm on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Greiner Funeral
Home. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, July 18, 2025, with visitation
up to the time of the service. Tim Tesmer, Pastor, will officiate the service.
The family would like to thank Westminster Village Health Care employees and
Southern Care Hospice employees for their compassionate care. Char’s smile and
bright eyes were often a conversation in the dining room at mealtime and she earned
the characteristic nicknames of Char Char and Spicey from her caregivers.
