Charles James "C.J." Maloof Obituary

Beloved father, grandfather and brother, Charles James (C.J.) Maloof, 83, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 4, 2025, following a year long struggle with health issues.  He was born April 19, 1941, in Terre Haute, the oldest child of Michael and Elaine Maloof.

C.J. was a graduate of Wiley High School and attended Indiana State University before he enlisted in the United States Army for three years and attained the rank of corporal while in Germany for two years.

He was a reporter for the Terre Haute Tribune Star for over 30 years. His work ethic, professionalism and dependability were so outstanding that his editor printed a special, featured article acknowledging and praising him for his invaluable contributions during his tenure at the Tribune Star.

Although he was a quiet, shy man, C.J. was a devout Orthodox Christian, never missing a service at his beloved St. George Orthodox Church, where he served on the church board in several roles and loved playing on the St. George Church softball team as the pitcher for many years.

C.J. enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and keeping physically fit by jogging and walking.  C.J. will forever be remembered by his two daughters for his “daddy burgers.”

Survivors include his daughters Melissa “Missy” Shahadey (Janet Sutherlin) of Bloomington and Melinda “Mindy” McCammon Bement (Keith) of Riley, sisters Patricia E. Maloof of Terre Haute and Judith N. Serkosky (Stan) of Pewaukee, Wisconsin.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Taylor (Ian) Hunter, Noah Shahadey, Adam Shahadey, Andrew McCammon Bement, Nicholas McCammon Bement and Levi Sutherlin, nieces Kathryn Serkosky, Ann Widen and nephew Michael Serkosky (Joy), great nephews Jack Widen, Beckett Serkosky and great niece Sloane Serkosky, and cousins Michael Ellis and family, Carl Edward Ellis and family, Jimmy Nasser, Gene Nasser, Sandie Silberzahn, Debbie Nasser, Renee Maloof, Sheila Maloof and Chuck Maloof.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Michelle “Shelly” Maloof, his brother Robert Joseph Maloof and an infant son, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services are 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, at St. George Orthodox Church, 1900 S. 4th Street, Terre Haute, with the Reverend Anthony Yazge and Reverend Archdeacon Elias Corey officiating.

Burial is in Highland Lawn Cemetery with committal services in the chapel.

Pallbearers are Noah Shahadey, Andrew McCammon Bement, Nicholas McCammon Bement, Levi Sutherlin, Jimmy Nasser, Michael Serkosky, Chris Ellis and Dr. Tony Nasser.

Visitation will be at the church from 4pm-8pm on Thursday, January 9, 2025, with Trisagion Prayers at 7:30pm also by the Reverend Anthony Yazge and Reverend Archdeacon Elias Corey. Visitation will also be before services on Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until service time in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in CJ’s memory to St. George Orthodox Church. The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to Wyndmoor Assisted Living and Westminster Village for the care C.J. received the last 16 months.

Greiner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
