Cherie Kay Lewis, 74, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on January 10, 2024, in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was born December 6, 1949, in Terre Haute to the late Bill and Juanita Atkinson and Bill and Helen Stone. Cherie was a devoted wife to Joseph Lewis, sister to Penelope Maynard, and a loving mother Charles and Angie Brock, Genie Hemmrich, Angie and David Whitesell and Jason and Erin Rankin. She was also a proud grandmother to Candace Morris, Seth Hemmrich, Samuel Hemmrich, Chelsea Lentes, Brent Whitesell, Kristi Brock, Dominic Rankin, Kristoffer Rankin and Avery King; a great grandmother to four great grandchildren. Cherie is preceded in death by her sister, Dottie Labbe; her brother, Michael Atkinson; and her son Charles Brock. Cherie believed that family is much more than blood relatives and considered many others her close family. She was particularly close to the Gregory family, consisting of many “brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.” If she said “you’re part of the family now,” she truly meant it.
Cherie had a fulfilling career as a Senior Custodial Supervisor at Facilities Management, Indiana State University, where she dedicated forty years of service before retiring. She was known for her caring and compassionate nature, which extended not only to her family but also to those around her.
Cherie was an avid crafter and artist, finding joy in painting, crocheting, needlepoint, and various other crafts.
The family would like to express thanks to the amazing care and encouragement of the staff of the Oncology Department, Radiation Therapy Department and the Infusion Center at the Hux Cancer Center. Also, a huge thank you to everyone at the Gibson Family Hospice Center at Union Hospital. In honor of Cherie’s memory, contributions can be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society. The family would like to express their gratitude to Greiner Funeral Home in Terre Haute for their assistance during this difficult time.
