Della Jeanette Brown Bender, 98, died at 12:45 a.m. May 25, 2022, at Harrison’s Crossing Health Campus in Terre Haute.
Della was born May 4, 1924, in Marshall, Illinois, to Don Flesher Brown (1902-1988) and Amy Rose McNary Brown (1904-1990). She was an artist and former member of River City Art Association.
She married Claude Albert Bender (1921-2006) on June 23, 1945, at Drew Field in Tampa, Florida. They had one son, Mike Leroy Bender (1957-2020).
Della is survived by one grandson, Brandon Bender, his wife Brooke, and their three children, Mikayla, Aiden, and Drake; one great-great-grandchild, Dominic Bracken; nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her sisters Elsie Joan Rooney and Anita Rose Crumrin.He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Isaac Brown (1923-2009), and two sisters, Martha Jane Price (1927-2010) and Norma Ruth Pittenger (1941-2017).
After graduation from Marshall High School, she began work at Quaker Maid in Terre Haute. She was working at the Tampa Electric Company when she married her husband, who was serving in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, she worked at Columbia Enameling and Stamping Company.
After moving to Chicago, she worked in the payroll department of Ford Motor Company. Upon returning to Terre Haute, Della worked for Girdler Construction Company of Kentucky at the Newport Army Ammunition plant and finished her working life after 30 years alongside her husband at Moon Freight Lines of Bloomington. During her employment at Moon Freight, she and her brother Homer owned B and B Trucking.
Following retirement, she served on the board at the Glenn Center, where she taught visual arts.
Services will be on Tuesday May 31, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47804. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Pastor Andy Crowe will be officiating. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery.
