Gary Willis Cunning passed away on October 2nd. He was a 1958 graduate of Fontanet High School and a 1962 graduate of Indiana State University, where played basketball & baseball for the Sycamores, and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He received his Masters degree in Education from ISU in 1963. He played professional baseball for several seasons, primarily in the Phillies and Astros organizations, then returned to Terre Haute as a teacher and coach in Vigo County schools, where he retired in 1998. He was the starting catcher for Terre Haute in the 1955 Babe Ruth World Series Championship winning team. He loved his family, traveling, telling jokes, and the game of baseball. He is preceded in death by Darlene, his wife of 57 years, and his son-in-law Rob Abbinette. He is survived by his sister Sandra, wife Cheryl, children Laure (Mike), Brian (Shirley), Sara (Sean) & Holly (Dennis), several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family misses him and is looking forward to a joyful reunion with him in eternity. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, October 7, 2024, at Noon, at New Life Fellowship, 7849 Wabash Ave, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Pastor Jeffrey Harpole will officiate services. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church on Monday, from 10:00a.m. until service time.
