Gary Hickman Obituary

Gary Hickman, 80, of Terre Haute passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by family and loved ones while under the care of hospice on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Gary was born May 28, 1941 in Terre Haute to Frank and Catherine Hickman.

Following graduation from Gerstmeyer High School in 1960, Gary served in the United States Army until 1963 with at least one year in South Korea. Upon leaving the military he married Deborah Hickman, his high school sweetheart, on October 26, 1963 in Terre Haute. Gary loved playing basketball and he loved fishing and hunting wildlife. He worked most of his life at Hercules/ AET in the laboratory dealing with plastics. Another part of his career that he often talked about was working at the Newport Chemical Depot at first making VX nerve gas in his younger years and then after retiring from AET he had went back to Newport and helped in the destroying of the VX gas.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Patricia Yandle, and his granddaughter Jenna Ripple. He leaves behind his wife Deborah of 58 years, his 3 daughters; Tresa Alton (Joey), Jennifer Ripple (Kenny), and Angela Childress, his grandchildren; CJ Alton (Kasey), Angela Elizabeth Alton, Victoria Childress, Kathryn Alton, Devin Childress, and Lleyton Ripple; his sister, Barbara Bledsoe; an international exchange daughter, Manami Kojima; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date as his wife is on hospice currently and the couple wished to have a combined memorial service.
