Homer Ray Kemp, 89, of Terre Haute passed away on October 18, 2020 in Union Hospital. Ray was born September 30, 1931 to Homer Kemp and Albertina Monniger Kemp. He attended Gerstmeyer High School. Ray served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 4 years. Ray was a Terre Haute Motorcycle Police Officer for 25 years. He helped design the Terre Haute Police Departments patch. As a motorcycle officer, he escorted John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Rosalyn Carter, and many others. He loved music, eating out at restaurants to see people, a clean car, Beeman’s chewing gum, airplanes, and sunshine. Ray was a life member of Fraternal Order of Police #85, the Marine Corp League, and the B.P.O Elks 86, and a member of the American Legion Post 104.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Helen James, and a brother, Fred Kemp.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Freida Joyce Jackson Kemp (m. 12/30/1960), sisters; Betty Arnold of Florida, and Marjorie Kearschner of Kentucky, special nieces and nephews, Joyce Ann Jackson, Karen Buchanan (Ron), Joanna Cundiff (John), Sue James, Mike Kemp, Craig Kemp, Larry Arnold, and Reed Jackson.
Services for Ray will be Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 1 pm in Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana, 47804. Visitation will be 11 am until service time at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation.
