James Richard Garber, 1935 – 2025 James “Jimmy” Garber, 89, died Wednesday January 15 at his home in Terre Haute, Indiana. Jim was born in Sandston, VA, the 4th of 5 boys. He graduated from King William High School and The University of Richmond where he studied music. His first career was as a high school chorus teacher and band director in Mechanicsville, VA. Music remained a part of his life as church choir director, a member of the Tobacco Land Chorus and as a performer in community theater and musical reviews both in Virginia and Indiana. He later became a photographer; shooting weddings, portraits and commercial accounts. Jim was a Master Photographer of the Professional Photographers of America and was proud to be named Photographer of the Year in 2007. Jim was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first in Richmond, Virginia and later in Terre Haute, Indiana where he had moved to be near his wife’s family. In his later years, Jim enjoyed his community at Juliet Peddle Park where he was lovingly known as “Mr. Fabulous” Jim was predeceased by his wife, Linda Hunt Garber and brothers, Lewis, Emmett and John. He is survived by daughters Amy Garber of Richmond, VA, Ashley (Jim) Adox of Ann Arbor, MI and Angela Wolff of Maplewood, NJ, his stepson Kris Hunt (Emily) of British Columbia, Canada and his brother Tommy Garber of King Willian, VA. Jim had 7 grandchildren - Benjamin and Garland Garber, Max and Nathan Adox and Ruth, Hannah and Miriam Wolff - who knew him as their “Grandpappy.” A small memorial service will be held on his favorite Bingo night at his residence in Terre Haute.
