John Stephen 'Steve' Leisure, 71, of Terre Haute, IN, passed away on July 1, 2021 in Union Hospital.
Steve was born May 9, 1950 in Lafayette, IN to Norma Jane 'White' Leisure and George O. Leisure Jr. At the age of 10, Steve's family moved to Greencastle, IN. He was a 1968 graduate of Greencastle High School. In 1974 Steve graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and went on to work as a Police Officer in Rensselaer, IN and West Terre Haute, IN, where he was named Chief of Police in 1982. In July of 1984 Steve accepted a position as police officer for the Terre Haute International Airport. Although he retired from the airport in 2012, after 28 years of service, he continued to work part-time for a few more years as needed.
In addition to law enforcement, Steve also worked for American Fire and Safety, served as a volunteer firefighter in Cloverdale and Bel Union, and was the West Terre Haute fire chief for 3 years.
His favorite hobbies and interests included fishing, mushroom hunting, and just being with family and friends, whom he also considered family.
Steve is survived by his beloved fur baby Cocoa (of 13 years), his brother George Michael 'Mike' Leisure and sister-in-law Lou of Grand Prairie, Texas, nieces Michele and Tyeisha Leisure, nephew Kevin Leisure, and step-granddaughter Erika Rogers. Preceding Steve in death were his father, mother, son, Richard M. Leisure, and grandson, Vaughn Leisure.
Services are scheduled for Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 3 p.m. at Greiner Funeral home, 2005 N.13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana, 47804. Visitation will be from 1pm until service time. Online condolences can be made at: www.greinerfuneralhome.com
