John Wesley Mason (89) of Terre Haute Indiana passed away on January 7, 2024 at his home while in Hospice Care
John was born on August 21, 1934 in Edgar County Illinois to Charley P. Mason and Lydia R.(Garner) Mason. John proudly served his Country in the US Army. John worked for Caterpillar in Joliet Illinois, decided factory work was not for him, moved back to Terre Haute and started a career as a Truck Driver and joined the Teamsters Union hauling freight for Transport Motor Express for many years until the company dissolved, through the Teamsters Union John drove for Bechtel Corporation for the Robinson Illinois Oil Refinery, when that job ended John through the Teamsters Union drove a water truck for Wabash Valley Asphalt until he was fortunate enough to retire at the age of 57. John was a self-made carpenter, mechanic, engineer, welder, electrician, and fixer of anything for anyone. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 104 and VFW post 972. John supported this children in sports, and continued this support to his grands and great grands, actually he supported all of us in anything we choose to do in life as long as it was within the confines of the law! LOL
John is survived by the love of his life, his beautiful wife Phyllis(Kennedy) Mason and four children and their spouses Janet Mason(Alvin), David(Elaine) Mason, Jayne(Mark)Wolff, Brian (Mendy) Mason, five grandchildren Shannon Mason, Miranda Gustafson, John David Mason, Wesley Wolff, Mason Wolff, three great grandchildren Isaiah Mason, Kyla Gustafson, David Max Gustafson. A host of nieces and nephews.
Our Husband, Daddy, Papaw was absolutely a family loving man, he loved to have his family together, he would always demand that when Thanksgiving and Christmas came that we only celebrate on a day that all of his kids, grands, and great grands could be together. He loved family reunions, and hosting our entire family members, friends, his children’s friends, friends of friends, everyone was always welcome to come for the fun, those gatherings at his home were pretty epic! Daddy was an amazing husband for 69 years to his loving wife, an amazing Father to his children and their spouses that he very much considered as his own, an amazing grandfather to his precious grandbabies and great grandbabies. Daddy also made sure that his family members were taken care of, if needed. Daddy will be missed not only by us, but by so very many family members, he certainly gave out huge love and it shows in the love returned to him!
John was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings and their spouses Cora(Jim) Nicoson, Woodrow Mason. Nellie(Thomas) Shillaci, Rebecca(Glenn) Hargis, Mary(Fred) Hargis, Lenora(Gene) Figg, Charlotte Jean(Lee) Roach, Infant Charles Mason, Raymond(Shirley) Mason, Paul(Hilda) Mason.
As per John’s wishes Cremation will take place without a public service, there will be a celebration of life, the John Mason way to celebrate, at a date yet to be determined.
