Judith Hadley Obituary

Judith Louise Hadley went to be with her Lord on January 5, 2020.  She will be greatly missed by her husband, Donald L. Hadley, of almost 60 years as well as her four children, Bonnie Hadley, Don Hadley, Laura Fagg (Gary Fagg), Jody Romig (John Romig) and a sister, Marsha McQueary (Bill McQueary). Judy was preceeded in death by her brother, William R. Stein. Judy was born in Chicago, Illinois to William G. Stein and Dorothy Decker Stein on January 21, 1940. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Royal Oak, Michigan where Judy lived until her senior year of high school. While in Michigan, Judy was involved in the school choir, girl scouts, tap, and ballet. At the age of 17, Judy’s family moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. She attended Wiley High School where she met her lifelong friends, Mary McQueary Schalburg, Linda McKain, and Judy Schwartz Davis. Judy was in the marching band’s flag corp. and graduated in 1958. Judy went on to attend Indiana State Teachers College where she was majoring in business and had a part-time job as a secretary in the art department. It was there that she met and fell in love with a young art student, Donald Lee Hadley.  Judy was preparing to leave her job for the evening when she told Don that he was taking her out to dinner. Thankfully, the small diner that they went to provided both a tasty and inexpensive meal. Their first date eventually led to their marriage on July 29, 1960.Judy worked hard to make each place they lived a warm and inviting home. She quickly became a wonderful cook and enjoyed opening up their home to friends and family. Judy kept busy taking care of their four children while Don taught art at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. She volunteered as a Brownie and a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, room mother, and PTA member. Despite her busy life, Judy always made time at the end of each evening to sit down with a good book. As the children got older, Judy took a position as an instructional assistant at Meadows Elementary School. She loved working with the staff and the students at Meadows for over twenty-five years. It was at Meadows, that Judy discovered her love for teaching young children how to read. She made an impact on many students’ lives while she was there, including the life of Anthony Thompson. In addition, to working and maintaining a home, Judy was active at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She helped organize the ladies’ teas, decorate the church, and host small group Bible studies. One of Judy’s personal ministries was writing notes of encouragement and gratitude to others whom the Lord had laid on her heart. She would spend hours at the kitchen table each week composing these notes. Judy and Don had the joy of celebrating their 40thwedding anniversary in Hawaii with their children, sons and daughter-in-law, and their grandchildren. Their 50thwedding anniversary was celebrated with a Caribbean cruise with their family. Don and Judy also traveled to Germany, Paris, and Japan to visit their children who were living there at the time. Judy loved people and was blessed to see her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews grow into adulthood. She also enjoyed her eight great grandchildren. She will be truly missed by all those who loved and knew her. Judy’s family invites those who knew her to a memorial service celebrating her life at Mount Pleasant Church, 3050 E Davis Dr., Terre Haute, Indiana, 47802 at 6 pm on Wednesday January 8, 2020. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4 pm until service time at the church on Wednesday.  If you would like to make a contribution to the local Humane Society in lieu of flowers this was an organization that she supported because of her love for animals.
