Larry Helman Obituary

Larry D. Helman, 79 of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away Wednesday, February 17th, 2021 in the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care surrounded by his family.  Larry was born March 1, 1941 in Terre Haute to Henry Helman and Emma Magill Helman.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan Sauer Helman, Son, Troy Helman and his wife Bernice, sister-in-law, Carol Helman, brother Jerry (Kathy), sister Dawn; grandchildren, Craig Helman (Heather Martin), Sarah Helman (Dylan Carr), Ryan Baker (Sahara), Abbe Baker as well as several nieces and nephews.  Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Carl Helman.

Larry was a life-long resident of Terre Haute, but was very proud of his farming background in his beloved, Bullskin, Illinois.  He was a graduate of Marshall High School and attended Indiana Business College.  Larry was a member of the National Guard.  Larry worked in retail sales, furniture sales and then opened his real estate company, Larry Helman “Has the Key” Agency in 1968 with his wife, Susan.  The agency grew and they built a new facility in downtown Terre Haute in 1978.  His son and daughter-in-law purchased the company in 2009, merged with Williams and Associates in 2010 and moved to 788 S 3rd Street in Terre Haute where they are today.  Larry and his company won numerous awards internationally with the Coldwell Banker Franchise.  Locally, Larry and Susan were recipients of the Chapman S Root Award presented by Hospice of the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council’s, Great American Dream Award.  Larry truly believed in community service and believed in service above self.  Larry was treasurer of the Indiana Association of REALTORS, President of Terre Haute Area Association of REALTORS, Regional Hospital board, Indiana State University Foundation Board, Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club, Breakfast Optimist, Scottish Rite, Zorah Shrine, Royal Order of the Jesters, Elks Club, Terre Haute Country Club, Sycamore Club.

Larry had a passion for his community and enjoyed being a part of many aspects of Terre Haute and the growth of our community. He especially enjoyed Indiana State University athletics and was involved in various activities with the basketball, football, and baseball organizations during the late 70’s and 80’s.  He was a loyal fan till the end.  But his greatest pride and joy of all was his family.  He was so proud of his son, daughter-in-law and his grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible.

The world lost a good one on February 17, 2021.  He was a great husband, father, grandpa and friend to everyone he met.  He loved life and lived it to the fullest.  Equal to his love for his family was his love for his work.  He loved being a REALTOR.  He left the real estate industry better than he found it.  Larry was a consummate professional, a harder worker and had an incredible drive for success.  Failure was never an option.  He set a great example for his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Larry leaves a remarkable legacy in the Terre Haute Community but also leaves a huge hole in the hearts of many.

Private services are planned with burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.  Webcast will be available via Greiner Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Facebook after 5:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 21, 2021.  The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley or the Indiana State University Foundation.  Greiner Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at ww.greinerfuneralhome.com.
