Laura Callahan Obituary

Laura Callahan, aged 87, died on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Cobblestone Crossings in Terre Haute, surrounded by family.

Born Laura Annabelle Thornburgh in Terre Haute in 1934 to Lester and Dorothy Greene Thornburgh. Following graduation from Garfield High School in 1954, she worked for DX and Roots Department Store. She was introduced to her husband, T. Edward “Ed” Callahan, by Emma Dommers, a family friend. They married in 1957 and had three children, Kathy, Brenda, and Kevin.

Laura worked for many years at the Instructional Materials Center of the Vigo County School Corporation. She loved her work and made many friends while employed there. In fact, she continued to work until she was 72! In addition, Laura loved to read, watch old movies (especially those with John Wayne in them), and spend time with friends and family. One of her favorite pastimes was the monthly luncheons attended by her former colleagues of the VCSC.

Laura was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, her brother Dan and his wife Adrienne, and her nephew Malcolm. She is survived by her children, Kathy (John Muenzberg) of Murray, Kentucky; Brenda Brumfield (Carlton) of Dunkirk, IN; and Kevin of Terre Haute, who cared for his mother for many years. In addition to her children, Laura is mourned by her three grandchildren, Alice and Simon Brumfield, and Lucy Woods-Callahan. She is also survived by her sister Mary Semba (Ron), nieces Debbie Considine and Laura Semba, and nephews Stewart Thornburgh and Ronnie Semba. Her friends Sedonya Osmon and Pauletta Allen meant the world to her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 am at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N 13th St, Terre Haute; Rev. Brad Bumgardner will officiate. The family will greet friends at 10:00 am the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Indiana, 50 E 91stSt., Ste. 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
