Martha “Marty” Lee Sholten, 78, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully, at Majestic Care of Deming Park, on Monday, August 28, 2023, following a year-long battle with brain cancer.
Marty was born on July 18, 1945, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of Herbert J. and Dorothy (Switzer) Sholten. She attended Catholic grade school and graduated from West Vigo High School in 1963. Marty worked at Beatrice Food’s and Indiana State University in the Home Economics Department, before moving to Tempe, Arizona in 1976. There she worked in the Department of Theatre for 13 years. In 1989, Marty moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for Radio Free Europe News Bureau. A family illness brought Marty back to Terre Haute in 1995. She worked in several departments at Union Hospital (including EAP and Diabetes Education) until her retirement in 2015.
Marty most recently was a member of St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church in Terre Haute, Indiana, but had also attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church and St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Through the years, she volunteered with several church programs including prison ministry, St. Benedict’s food kitchen, “Manna from Heaven” food distribution program, and St. Benedict’s annual summer carnival. Marty was an avid reader. She loved to travel and would do so whenever possible. She never met a stranger and loved time spent with her family very much.
Marty was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Ann Williams, brother-in-law Robert Franklin, nephew Patrick Wallace, and great-nephew Aiden Adam Bays.
She is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy Franklin, Kathy Danielsen (Paul) and Max Williams; nieces and nephews Karen Scully (Eddie), Carey Williams (Sherry), Chip Williams (JoAnn), Clint Williams (Kelly), Mike Wallace, Alice Ramsey, Veronica Pickell (Sharon), Chris Pickell (Ashley), and Kelly Bays (Cale); special uncle and aunt, Dale and Joan Akers and family of Phoenix, AZ; as well as several great nieces and great nephews, including special great niece and great nephew Sydney and Jace Bays, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, September 18, 2023, at 11:00a.m. in St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church, 2405 South 7th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47802. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery in Brazil, Indiana. Visitation will be at the church on Monday, from 10:00a.m. until service time.
