Mary Alice Newman, 81, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday July 25, 2024 in her residence. Mary Alice was born in Terre Haute to Charlie and Cora Barnes Myers. She and her husband John, were the former owners of Shadow Auction Barn for 26 years, after purchasing it from John and Betty Shadow. She had earlier worked for Schultz Department store for 13 years in the Scouting and Credit Department. She had worked at Mineweld Company for 17 years as their Office Manager. When her sons were young, she worked out of her home selling Avon cosmetics, building a large clientele as well as winning several awards for her sales volume. She was a devoted wife and mother who was proud of her family. She was very active in son’s lives, signing them up in Baseball, basketball leagues and every activity the YMCA had to offer. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for the kids in the neighbor while John Sr. was the Cub Scout Leader. Mary Alice was very good at planning events and fundraisers to help others. During the time that they owned Shadow Auction, they were able to do what they really enjoyed, buying and selling antiques. During this time they developed many meaningful relationships. The never considered the people that worked for them as employee’s, but friends. Mary Alice married the love of her life, John Conrad Newman, February 7, 1959, they were married for 63 years until his passing, January 5, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, David Newman in January 2024 as well as one brother, Bill Myers and his wife Becky and a sister in-law and brother in-law, Nancy and Ed Newman that she kept in close contact with until their passing as well as several close friends and family members. She was also preceded by her dog Jody, who Mary spoiled very much. She is survived by one son, John Conrad Newman Jr., of Avon. She was one of 9 children, seven survive; Charlene Cooper (Jack), Carol Miller (Ron), Linda Sampson (Don), Sandy Jameson (Buddy), Debbie Swain (Gus), Kathy Mayes (David) and Becky Myers Fox Gibson (Doug. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Kathy Couch for her kindness and assistance during a difficult time. Services are scheduled for Wednesday July 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories at Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Greiner Funeral Home were entrusted with arrangements.
