Max Payne Obituary

Max Michael Payne, 84, of Terre Haute, Indiana, formally of Jasper, Missouri, passed away February 21, 2025. He was born August 13th, 1940, in Arkansas City, KS, to Lucy (Clark) Payne and Virgil D Payne. He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. He was a Graduate of William Jewell College and then began teaching in Missouri. He was a High School football coach for many years, coaching at Bethany High School in Missouri, North Kansas City High School in Missouri and Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He then moved to Terre Haute in 1980, where he coached football at Indiana State University. Max was a huge Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Missouri Tigers Fan.  He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 57 years Carolyn Payne; his parents; and sister Peggy Hassig. Max is survived by his son Douglas Denton Payne (Becky); daughter Andrea Michelle Clinkenbeard (Larry); grandchildren Eliza Scherb, Stephen Payne, Danielle Payne and Matt Clinkenbeard; great grandchildren Carl Scherb III, Cody Scherb and Ciara Scherb; great great grandchild Nevaeh; sisters Marcia Howell and Pam Payne and several nieces and nephews.  Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday March 29th, 2025, at 11:00 am at Central Presbyterian Church, 125 N 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807.The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Presbyterian Church Deacon Fund. Care and arrangements have been entrusted to Greiner Funeral Home.
