Phyllis Black Rutherford, 89, passed into the arms of her Savior on Monday, November 6, 2023.
Phyllis was born in Fries, Virginia on November 22, 1933, to Clarence and Mable (Bennett) Black. In 1952, she married her loving husband, Claude. They enjoyed sixty years of marriage until his passing in 2012.
Phyllis was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a born-again Christian, a member of the Methodist Church, and a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, traveling, and spending time with her family.
Phyllis and Claude lived in several states before retiring in Spring Valley, Virginia where they enjoyed their farm together. She will be remembered for her homemade pies, her devotion to her church, and her love for nature. She had a beautiful, humble spirit and was always willing to share her love for Jesus, even with strangers. Her never-ending love for her children and grandchildren will be her legacy.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Louise Hawks.
She is survived by her children Michael Rutherford (Danette) and Susan Carter (Mike); seven grandchildren: Michael Rutherford Jr, Allison Ferguson, Emily Johnson, Bennett Rutherford, Tracy Heyer, Paige Carter, Garrett Carter; sixteen great-grandchildren, and a sister Onita Black.
Phyllis will be buried next to her husband, Claude, in Fries, Virginia at a private graveside service on November 18, 2023.
