Roger Noble Obituary

Roger Lee Noble, age 70, passed away suddenly Friday, November 1, 2024 at his home in Indianapolis. He was born May 8, 1954, in Brigham City, Utah to Myrvin Elias and Iris Moore Noble. He was the second of their four children. He spent his childhood in Alexandria and Springfield, Virginia. His teen years were spent in Lakewood and Golden, Colorado. He attended Wheat Ridge High School, graduating in 1972. Roger was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life, serving in many capacities. He also served as a missionary in the Florida South Mission from 1973 to 1975. While in Logan, Utah, at Utah State, he met and married Nan Woodward, June 5, 1981. Later, after raising their four children, they divorced but remained close friends. He attended and graduated from Brigham Young University, continuing his education at Utah State University, where he completed a masters degree in virology and a PhD in immunology. He went on to do a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. Roger was a faculty member at the medical education center at Ball State University and later a visiting professor at Auburn University. He spent the last 26 years of his working career at Roche Diagnostics in Indianapolis. He kept himself busy with a stacked social calendar, including weekly book discussions with friends at the Methodist church, gospel study with friends in his local LDS congregation, and playing tennis. He enjoyed going for bike rides, taking walks, and attending the temple. He was generous with his time and possessions, willing to assist whenever he saw a family member, friend, neighbor, or even stranger in need. Traveling with his family brought him great joy, especially with his children. This past year he saw his first full solar eclipse, traveled to Europe where he visited some of the lands of his ancestors and enjoyed the company of fellow travelers, and most recently, celebrated the wedding of his daughter in September.  Getting to know people seemed to be something that he not only enjoyed but was good at. He connected and made new friends everywhere he went. He made a special effort while traveling to visit with family, including extended family members, regardless of how long it had been since they last saw one another. He sought out family members that had not been heard from in years and reconnected when others were not able to. In turn, they loved his visits, and he left them with fond memories and the assurance that they mattered. For these and many other reasons, we will miss him greatly and love him forever. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as by his father- and mother-in-law, Clair and Jeri Woodward.  He is survived by his children: Samuel, Taipei, Taiwan; Brett, San Francisco, California; Allison, American Fork, Utah; Mariah (Juan Casiano), Heber City, Utah; and their mother, Nan Noble; siblings: Janet (Verl) Soderquist, Rexburg, Idaho; Mary Lou (David) Jespersen, Conifer, Colorado; and David (Marietje) Noble, Plymouth, Michigan; many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins, and two beloved aunts. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 9 at 11 a.m. ET at the LDS church, 11220 E. 30th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46229. Those unable to attend in person are welcome to watch the service online at https://zoom.us/j/93167393918. Visiting hours will be held at the same address on Friday, November 8 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, November 9 at 10 a.m.  In honor of Roger, donations may be sent to Indiana Public Radio, United Way of Central Indiana, or your favorite charity.
