Sheron Fortenbery Obituary

Sheron L. Fortenbery, 86, passed away July 5, 2018 in Fort Wayne.  She was born in Detroit, MI to the late Edgar and Mildred Brown.  Sheron was proud to be a homemaker, first and foremost. She did work as a substitute teacher in Terre Haute and Clinton schools for a short time, and she was the Director of Christian Education at Central Christian Church for a while. However, these positions allowed her to still be available to her children. Sheron did volunteer work for numerous organizations. She was a founding member of the Alpha Xi Delta chapter at Indiana State University, she was Indiana’s Mother of the Year in 1995, and she helped start a literacy program at the Clinton Library. Sheron was a loving person who never met a stranger. She was actively involved in the community and was a member of many organizations. She participated in Bible Study Fellowship, American Mothers, a rug hooking group, the Art Gallery in Rockville, church choir, and many, many other groups. Sheron loved nature, art, crafting, singing, playing piano and serving her Lord. Sheron and her husband had a booth at the Covered Bridge Festival for 21 years, and they owned a Christmas Tree Farm for several years. They were also members of the Classic Car Club and enjoyed traveling in their Model A, Odie. Sheron’s many interests allowed her to make close friends and to touch many lives. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Tom Fortenbery, daughter Becca Widmer (Dick), son Jeff Fortenbery (Peg), grandchildren Christopher Olson (Laura), Lindsay Hand (Mark), Elissabeth White (Andrew),  Ashley Gilmore ( Matt), Mariah Widmer (fiancé Bryce), and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Matt Fortenbery (Karen.) Memorial services will be held at Memorial Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47803, on Monday, July 16 at 4:00 pm. Visitation from 2:00-4:00 pm. Dinner following the service. Memorials to Memorial Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.greinerfuneralhome.com .
