Stephen M. Chernay passed away on Tuesday March 9, 2021 at Union Hospital with all of his family by his side. He was born on July 21, 1941 to Frank and Hilda Mary Chernay.
Steve was well known in the retail and wholesale meat business for many years. Before he retired, Steve was the Transportation Director during Judy Anderson’s term as Mayor of Terre Haute.
Steve graduated from Schulte High School in 1959, where he met the love of his life, Michele Johnson. He and Michele were married for 58 years and he is survived by her. He is also survived by their three amazing daughters Michele Peck (Jim) of Greencastle, IN. Molly Clark (Jeff) of Terre Haute, IN and Mariette Fleck (Chris Smedley) of Greenwood, IN. Grandchildren Lauren Clark, Leisl Rudlaff (Adam), Jeffrey Clark (Cami), Adam Peck, Nathan Peck (Arika), Sam Fleck and Jacob Fleck, great- grandchildren Nora and Mya Grandidier, Anna and Avery Rudlaff, Daisy, Willow and Rivers Peck, and Jeffrey Clark. Steve is also survived by a sister Mary Ann Liebler (Ed) of Franklin TN, Several nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law Chery Wolfe (Murray) of Indianapolis IN. and a brother-in-law Brian Johnson of Louisville, KY.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Margie Nan Chernay-Krause.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Wursta in the ER at Union Hospital, and all the wonderful ladies at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care for the comforting care they gave the short time we were there.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on March 27 at 10:00 am with Father Dan Bedel officiating.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date due to Covid 19. A private family burial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be made at www.greinerfuneralhome.com
