Thomas Dunbar Obituary

Thomas L. Dunbar, 73, of Terre Haute, Indiana, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Sunday, May 24, 2020.  Tom was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 19, 1947 to James and Gertrude Dunbar.  He married Bev Jones Dunbar on December 7, 1973.  Tom is survived by his wife of 46 years and their daughters Carrie Steadman and Cristie (Jess) Hoggatt; grandchildren Hannah, Kenzie, Taylor, Trey, Morgan, and Luke; brother Bill Dunbar and wife Marty; sister-in-law June Dunbar as well as special friends and travel companions Bill and Sally Stewart (hate that those road trips have come to an end). He is also survived by his wife’s family, sister-in-law Rita Keller, niece Juli (Todd) Carpenter; brother-in-law Michael Jones and nephew Rick (Rochelle) Keller; brother-in-law Max (Gail) Jones.  Tom is preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim Dunbar.  Tom graduated from Garfield High School and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.  Tom proudly served in the Indiana Air National Guard Air Police.  He retired from the Terre Haute Police Department in 1990 where he served as a Juvenile School Detective at Chauncey Rose Junior High School. Serving in that capacity of a Juvenile Officer, Tom gave many educational talks as “Stranger Danger”, “Mike the Bike”, and” Just Say No”. After retiring from the THPD, Tom worked at the Indiana State University Police Department.  Following that, he was the Chief at the Terre Haute Regional Airport where he ended his 39 year career in law enforcement in 2009. Tom was a member of BOP (Elks) where he enjoyed many fond memories at the pool, golf course, bowling alley and bar. He was a member of the Marine Corp League, Krienstein Post, Montezuma Fish and Game Club, and the Sycamore Club.  Tom is most remembered by his gift of gab.  He loved to tell stories and enjoyed a good healthy belly laugh.  He was a trivia nut.  His love of lawn and gardening was evident as his yard was among the most immaculate and well cared for in the neighborhood.  Tom enjoyed playing golf with his cronies and also enjoying the 19th Hole with them after.  Tom’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Sang Huh, Kim Zinkovich in addition to their nurses, and the nurses in the Infusion Center at Providence Medical for their care and treatment through his cancer diagnosis.  Even though the cancer was not what got him, he loved all that worked in that office and cared for him there.  Also the care received at Union Hospital’s Emergency Department, Telemetry and Intensive Care Unit was spectacular.  Arrangements for Tom have been entrusted to Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana, Visitation will be from 11:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2020.  Services will begin at 1:00p.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery.   The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Terre Haute Humane Society, 1811 S Fruitridge Ave), the Salvation Army (234 S 8th Street), or the charity nearest and dearest to your heart.  God Bless.
