William "Bill" Smiddy Obituary

William "Bill" Glenn Smiddy was a wonderfully caring and thoughtful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. He left this world suddenly, surrounded by his family on November 27th, 2021, at age 72. It was all too soon.
He was born to very humble beginnings in Terre Haute, Indiana, and became a pillar of his community. He was a rare kind of man who was selfless, giving, and kind while still believing in the American dream of success driven by effort and intellect. He valued knowledge, learning and most of all, hard work.
Bill was a true entrepreneur and philanthropist. Forty years ago, from one truckload of carpet rolls bought with borrowed money and sold out of a rented room, Bill built a thriving business that today employs dozens and gives money back to our community. He worked tirelessly to see it become a success.
He told his children and grandchildren to always "leave the wood pile a little higher than it was" and that he certainly did. Words truly can't express how much he will be missed by his family, friends, employees, customers, colleges, and community. He will live on in all the hearts he touched and minds he inspired to do great things.
Bill was an avid traveler, a 1967 State High and later Indiana State Sycamore alumnus, Army veteran, and Golden Glove boxer. He was a proud and active member of Saint Benedict's Parish.
Bill enjoyed all sports, but baseball was his love, with his favorites being the Chicago Cubs and the Indiana State Sycamores. Bill spent many years as the Sycamore Baseball radio color commentator.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents William and Audrey Smiddy, and his sister Beverly Williams. Bill is survived by his devoted wife Star; sisters Helen Blubaum and Jane Muldoon; daughter Andrea Smiddy Schlagel (Doug) of Abilene, Texas; son Dan Smiddy (Robin) of Terre Haute, Indiana; stepchildren Jessica Saunders and Jerrad Dugger; grandchildren Erin Schlotta, Audrey Smiddy, Mason Talkington, Ali Adams, Mallory Nease, Beau Dean, and Addison Smiddy; and his newest joy, his great-granddaughter Amelia Schlotta.
Visitation will be held at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th Street, on Friday, December 3rd, from 4pm to 7pm. Mass of the Christian burial will be held at Saint Benedict's Catholic Church, 111 S. 9th Street, at 10am on Saturday, December 4th. There will be no graveside services. Father Martin Day will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolences may be made at:
